The Santa Barbara City College Baseball team took home two of the top awards in the Western State Conference North in 2017. Allan Hancock College and Ventura College represented the other two awardees as SBCC's John Jensen was named the Player of the Year, AHC's Walker Armstrong the Pitcher of the Year, and SBCC's Jeff Walker and VC's Don Adams the Coaches of the Year.
Jensen was second in the WSC North with a .338 average, and fourth in on-base percentage (.422). Jensen scored 25 runs, drove in 20 RBIs, stole 12 bases, and belted four home runs. In WSC North play, Jensen hit .380 with 14 runs and 10 RBIs.
Armstrong meanwhile led the entire WSC In innings pitched, with 100.2 innings worth of work to his name this year. He was third in the WSC and led the WSC North with wins at eight, and finished with a 2.15 ERA, which was fifth in the whole WSC. Armstrong fanned 81 total batters, finishing third in the WSC in that category, and surrendered just 25 total walks, in his centuries worth of work on the hill. In WSC North play, Armstrong was 7-2, with a 1.35 ERA, and 49 punch outs.
Walker was named the Coach of the Year after leading the Vaqueros to their fifth overall conference title, a 23-18 overall mark and 13-7 record in WSC North play. Santa Barbara would go on to be seeded #6 in the 2017 CCCAA SoCal Baseball Playoffs. Adams meanwhile wrapped up a two-decade career for the Pirates going 20-20 overall and 10-10 in WSC North play, just missing out on a post-season bid. It's the third Coach of the Year nod for Walker and the second for Adams.
