SMC’s Jovic Wins Second Career Singles Title; Glendale’s Ono & Galstyan Claim Doubles Title

Ventura, CA - Santa Monica College sophomore Mayra Jovic came up just shy of becoming the first player in recent Western State Conference Women’s Tennis history to win two conference singles and doubles title. Jovic came up with a pair of singles titles, but fell along with partner and freshman Abby Mullins to Glendale College sophomores Veronica Galstyan and Tsukimi Ono in the doubles championship match.

Bakersfield, Glendale, and Santa Monica Split 2017 Women’s Tennis Title

For the first time in the Western State Conference’s last 37 years the women’s tennis team championship ended in a 3-way tie. Bakersfield College, Glendale College, and Santa Monica College, all finished at 10-2 in WSC play. It’s the third straight conference title for Glendale, the first for Santa Monica since 2014 and sixth overall, and the first for Bakersfield since 2006 and fourth overall for the Renegades.

VC’s Sagara Wins Singles; Glendale’s Shumakova and Gharabegi Win Doubles

Ventura College freshman Mariko Sagara won the 2016 Western State Conference Women’s Tennis Singles Championship late last week. Conference champion Glendale College meanwhile was home to the WSC Doubles Champion in sophomores Viktoriya Shumakova and Meredy Gharebegi.

After two straight seasons of being the runner-up, the Glendale College Women’s Tennis team finally broke through in 2015 claiming their first ever conference championship. The Vaqueros finished the conference season 9-1, edging Santa Barbara City College who finished 8-2.

Santa Monica’s Jovic Sweeps Women’s Tennis Singles and Doubles

Santa Monica College’s Mayra Jovic swept the 2015 Western State Conference Women’s Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships this past weekend. Jovial won the singles title and then turned around and won the doubles title with partner Izabel Nazdracheva.

Santa Monica’s Nelkin and Tsuda Grab Runner-Up Finish

The doubles team of Juliana Nelkin and Kaori Tsuda ended up with a runner-up finish at the 2013 California Community College Athletic Association Women’s State Doubles Championships recently. Nelkin and Tsuda lost in the State Finals 6-4 and 7-5.

Santa Barbara City College freshman Bruna Magalhaes was named the Western State Conference Player of the Year recently, while Santa Monica’s Richard Goldenson was named the WSC Coach of the Year.

Santa Barbara’s Magalhaes Wins State Singles Title

Santa Barbara City College’s Freshman Bruna Magalhaes won the 2013 California Community College Athletic Association Women’s State Singles Title recently. It is the first State Singles Title by a Vaquero in the Women’s Tennis Program history.
