2020 WSC South Men’s Basketball Awards Announced
With the 2020 Western State Conference South Division Men's Basketball season official in the rearview mirror, the 2020 regular season awards have been announced. LA Valley College head coach Virgil Watson was named the Coach of the Year, while West Los Angeles College sophomore Christian McCray was named the Most Outstanding Player. Sophomore forward Jon Martens of LA Valley and sophomore guard Michael Guillory of Bakersfield College rounded out the top honors as both were named the Defensive Player of the Year.
McCray was the second leading scorer in the WSC South in 2020, averaging 18 points per game on 53.3% shooting from the floor and 39.6% shooting from downtown. McCray also averaged 6.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists per contest as he helped push the Wildcats back into the post-season.
Guillory for Bakersfield was often tasked with guarding the best player on the floor for the Renegades during the conference season. Guillory did so while also averaging 9.8 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and a steal a contest. For Martens, the long wing, averaged 9.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
For Watson, it's the first time he's earned the nod since he was the head man at Ventura College back in 1996. Watson guided the Monarchs to a share of the WSC South title along with Citrus College, their first since 2003.
