SBCC Hires Familiar Faces as Co-Coach Men's Golf
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Santa Barbara City College Men's Golf is excited to announce Devin Engebretsen and Craig Moropoulos as its co-coaches for the spring 2026 season.
It should be a fun partnership—Engebretsen is currently the head coach of the Men's Basketball and Women's Golf teams, while Moropoulos has led the Football program for nearly two decades. With Women's Golf and Football being fall sports and Men's Basketball in the winter, the schedule will keep the pair busy, but with only a little overlap.
"It's great to be back working with our Men's Golf team. I think we can really build something special here," Engebretsen said. "Being able to teach side-by-side with Coach Moropoulos allows our student-athletes the opportunity to maximize instruction, recruitment, and retention. We look forward to building our student-athletes academically, personally, and athletically during their time as a Vaquero. Now let's go make some birdies!"
Under his direction, the Women's Golf team advanced to last year's State Championship Tournament. Beyond his SBCC coaching duties, though, Engebretsen has even more experience on the golf course. Locals may know him as the co-founder of the Central Coast Club Hoppers Men's Golf Club and a former board member of the Santa Barbara Men's Golf Club. In 2023, he was crowned club champion at both Glen Annie Men's Golf Club and Santa Barbara Men's Golf Club, defending the latter title in 2024, too.
As for Moropoulos, his coaching resume speaks for itself. After a 14-year journey as an assistant at Division-I Football programs, he returned to lead his alma mater, Santa Barbara High, to a Channel League title. Now, while spending his spare time as a golf instructor, the upcoming Football season will be his 19th as SBCC's head coach. Overall, he has been coaching for 41 years.
"I am really excited to continue the rich golf tradition and academic excellence of our Men's Golf program," Moropoulos said. "Working with a good friend and colleague, Devin, will give our young men tremendous opportunities to succeed in golf and life. Competing for a conference title—and ultimately, a state championship—are challenges both Devin and I are looking forward to."
With excellence oozing from the coaching staff, they inherit a program that finished third in the state in 2024. SBCC Men's Golf seems headed for a positively unique year under the guidance of two of the athletic department's most seasoned and respected coaches.
