Citrus Men’s Soccer Takes Two of Three WSC South Honors; Canyons the Third
In it's 21st season of Men's Soccer competition as a member of the Western State Conference, the Citrus College Men's Soccer team won it's first every conference title in 2017. For that effort, the Owls were rewarded richly with Head Coach Fred Bruce-Oliver earning Coach of the Year honors, and freshman midfielder Sergio Gonzalez was named the Player of the Year along with sophomore College of the Canyons forward Aaron Winsick.
Bruce-Oliver led the Owls to a 7-6-7 overall record in 2017, including a 5-1-4 mark in WSC South play. Citrus totaled 19 points, edging second place Glendale College by a single point. The Owls would also go on to earn the program's first ever post-season berth in the 2017 CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs, when they were seeded #15 in Southern California, where they fell to #2 overall seed Mt. San Antonio College in the opening game.
Gonzalez, one of 12 Owls to earn All-WSC South honors, led Citrus with 19 points on the year. Gonzalez scored seven goals and handed out seven assists, including three scores and a pair of assists in WSC South play. Winsick, an All-WSC South Honorable Mention honoree as a freshman, would finish the year with nine total goals and an assist on the year, with seven of those nine goals and the one assists, coming during WSC South competition.
