Ventura Men's Tennis Completes Undefeated WSC Campaign
The Pirates' men's tennis team defeated Bakersfield 8-1 Thursday at the Pierpont Racquet Club to complete their 2024 Western State Conference slate with a perfect 8-0 record. The Pirates have now clinched 20 Western State Conference title in 26 competitive seasons under head coach Nelson Emery. Rafael Matias and Julian Tellez started the day off with an 8-1 victory in No. 2 doubles. Robinson Pelluault and Edgar Ploquin soon followed with the identical score i No. 3 doubles while Emery and Lucas Abreau also posted an 8-1 win in No. 1 doubles.
Pelluault won his No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-2 before Ploquin clinched the VC victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 6 slot. Emery posted a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 1 and Tellez captured a point by a 6-3, 6-2 score at No. 4. Matias went three sets at No. 2, taking a 6-0, 6-7 (5), 10-6 decision. Meanwhile, Abreau narrowly lost his No. 3 match, also in three sets, 7-6 (7), 2-6, 10-5.
The victory was the Pirates' 25th consecutive Western State Conference victory dating back to a March 7, 2019 setback against Glendale.
Ventura should receive one of the top two seeds in the upcoming 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoffs. Meanwhile, they will also begin play in the WSC Singles and Doubles Championships on Tuesday, April 2 at the VC Tennis Center.
