Fresh off the program's first conference title since 2007 and first outright conference championships since 1998, the Bakersfield College Men's Basketball team claimed the top two spots in the WSC South awards over the weekend. Sophomore wing Deandre Dickson repeated as the WSC South Player of the Year and 11th year Head Coach Rich Hughes earned his second career WSC South Coach of the Year award.
Dickson, who will be one of the most sought after community college recruits in Southern California, averaged 17.8 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game. His 12.3 rebounds per game average was the highest in both the North and South Divisions in the WSC, and was the second highest mark in the State. Dickson also led the WSC in field goal percentage, converting 56.2% of his attempts from the floor, finishing 22nd in the CCCAA in that category. Dickson is just the second player in WSC history to repeat as the conference player of the year, following in the footsteps of former Bakersfield College player Terrance Johns who accomplished the feat in 2006 and 2007.
Hughes meanwhile, picked up the Coach of the Year nod after leading the Renegades to the WSC South crown. Bakersfield finished the regular season with a 23-5 record overall and 12-2 mark in WSC South play, three games ahead of second place Antelope Valley College. Bakersfield was handed the #9 seed and will head to WSC North Co-Champion Moorpark College on Friday night for a 7:00 PM playoff showdown.
