Cheatham-January, Whitlock Named State Players of the Week
Sacramento, Calif. - LA Mission's sophomore middle blocker Amya Cheatham-January and Santa Monica's freshman middle blocker/outside hitter/libero Mia Whitlock were named the CCCWVCA State Players of the Week for Week No. 7, announced Monday.
Leading the state in blocks per set (2.02), solo blocks (69), and block assists (64), Cheatham-January added 14 more total blocks this past week to lead No. 7 LA Mission to a pair of wins over Allan Hancock and No. 22 Ventura on the road. Offensively, Cheatham-January racked up 29 kills, hitting. 386 over the two matches. She averages 2.80 kills per set, hitting .408 overall.
Whitlock, a utility player for Santa Monica who can play all six positions, tallied 20 kills, hitting .355, 11 digs, and two aces last week in No. 9 Santa Monica's sweeps of Bakersfield and Citrus. She has led the Corsairs to a 14-4 mark, 3-0 in conference play, and a perfect 10-0 at home. Overall on the season, she averages 2.61 kills per set and 2.51 digs per set with 34 total aces.
Cheatham-January and Whitlock are the fourth and fifth CCCWVCA State Players of the Week from the WSC, respectively. They join Santa Barbara City's middle blocker Hazel Irvine (Week No. 2) and outside hitter Bayley Padia (Week No. 4) and LA Mission's outside hitter Madison "Maddie" Perry (Week No. 4).
College of San Mateo's outside hitter Synia Hunt was the third CCCWVCA State Player of the Week.
