Canyons’ Mathews and Ventura’s Mircetic Win Player and Coach of the Year Awards
College of the Canyons sophomore Keiona Mathews was named the Western State Conference North Division Player of the Year on Sunday afternoon, while Ventura College Women’s Basketball Head Coach Ned Mircetic earned his 10th Coach of the Year honor.
College of the Canyons sophomore Keiona Mathews was named the Western State Conference North Division Player of the Year on Sunday afternoon, while Ventura College Women's Basketball Head Coach Ned Mircetic earned his 10th Coach of the Year honor.
Mathews was one of the top scorers in the State during the 2013-2014 season. Mathews averaged 25 points a game the highest mark in the entire Western State Conference and the second highest mark in the entire California Community College Athletic Association. Mathews scored a season high 47 points on February 12th in 100-91 win at Moorpark College. Mathews also averaged 10.2 rebounds a game, and converted 41.4% of her shots from the floor.
Mircetic meanwhile continued to do what he does best, lead the Pirates Women's Basketball squad to a pile of victories. Ventura was 27-3 overall on the year and a perfect 12-0 in WSC North play en route to their 24th consecutive WSC Championship. It's believed to be the longest consecutive women's basketball conference championship streak in CCCAA history, and the third longest in any sport.
